The Idafa Process with Ikin (Palm Nut Reading)

The divination, called idafa (or Ifá dida / dafa), is performed by a trained priest: a Babalawo (“father of secrets”) or Iyanifa (female Ifá priestess in some lineages).

Preparation — The client states their question or situation. The babalawo invokes Orunmila with prayers, taps the opon Ifá (divination tray covered in sacred powder, iyẹrosun) using an iroke Ifá (tapper) to call the spirits.

Casting the Ikin — The priest holds all 16 ikin in one hand (usually the left).

With the other hand, they quickly grab as many as possible to transfer them.

They count how many remain in the original hand: 1 remaining = two marks (||), 2 remaining = one mark (I).

This creates a binary figure (single or double line).

Marking the Odu — This grab-and-count is repeated 8 times (or in paired steps) to form two columns of 4 marks each, making one full Odu (e.g., Eji Ogbe, Oyeku Meji). There are 256 possible Odu (16 principal + combinations).

Interpretation — The Odu revealed points to specific verses (ese Ifá) from the vast oral corpus. The babalawo chants or recites relevant parts, explains the message, identifies spiritual forces at play, and prescribes:

Ẹbọ (sacrifices/offerings to balance energies).

Rituals, herbs, taboos, or actions to follow.

Warnings or blessings.
