Description
Ori” (often capitalized as Orí) literally means “head.” It refers to far more than the physical head—it’s the divine inner self, personal destiny, spiritual intuition, consciousness, and one’s highest guiding force. Ori is considered the most important “deity” in an individual’s life, even more powerful than other Orishas (divinities), because success, balance, and fulfillment in life depend on a harmonious relationship with it.
The concept splits into aspects like:
Ori Inu (inner head): The spiritual essence, character (ìwà pẹ̀lẹ́ or good character), and consciousness.
Ori Ode (outer head): The physical head as its vessel.
Overall, Ori embodies the unique destiny chosen before birth, acting as a spiritual compass connecting one to Olódùmarè (the supreme creator) and aligning personal path with cosmic purpose.
Ori scrub (or head rogation/appeasement, sometimes called Ori Bibọ, bori, or Ibori) is a ritual practice of cleansing, nourishing, and honoring the Ori.
